Pretty Mike: A Series of Fortunate Events
December 22, 2008, 11:13 am
Laugh if you want, but I watch church on Sundays. Is it the least I could do? Yes but it’s something, and something is always better than nothing. So yesterday morning Joel Olsteen was talking about blessings and how little things like parking spots in a busy parking lot was Gods favor, or how a concept or idea was God inspiring you.
I took the message in and was waiting for something good to happen when the Lords messenger came via text message. “do you have Taylor’s home phone number?”…”Sure (I responded with the number).”A few minutes later I received another text: “You wanna go see Redskins vs Philly at 4pm?” I knew this meant Taylor must not have been able to go, later I found out Taylor responded via text message “too hung-over”. To be honest I felt bad I had such a great time because Taylor bleeds the burgundy and gold and this was the first game I’ve seen all season…and it was more of an event than a game.
A few minutes after the text, Tim called me to give me the necessary information, we were going to meet in the parking lot at 1 and tailgate with some guys and gals from the “industry” and then hit the tailgate club.
Walking up and meeting several people wearing head to toe redskins/philly gear we shook hands and were then filled in on the “wheel of death”, which held several shots and a spinning arrow to choose your poison for you, followed up by incredible brawts, cheese steaks, chips, dips, cakes and candies followed up still by a blender that was powered by a mower engine which made “cooleys” or a gallon of rum, bananas, strawberry’s and some mix…it was delicious.
Having warmed our blood with fine spirits and filled our gullets with delicious food, game time was drawing near so said our goodbyes and headed in for the swag of the “Tailgate Club”-
The day got better and better every time we moved from one thing to the next, I had to give it to Tim he has quite a network of friends and colleagues at FedEx field. Near half time we met some other friends of Tim’s and after a round at the stand up bar we were invited back to their seats on the 50 yard line…Joe Gibbs was sitting one level up, and as the game clock ticked towards zero with the crowd going crazy I finally understand why people are so dedicated to their teams and the atmosphere that comes along with it…I may try and get out there twice next season.
What a day! Thanks Tim.

Not Happy-
December 12, 2008, 10:00 am
I am currently completely unsatisfied with the state of Prettymike WorldWide HQ.
So like any good diva I am going to go within myself, avoid the paparazzi at any cost and recharge my creative juices throughout this holiday season. I am going to worry about shooting beautiful art, not posting on this site.
While writing this it occurred to me that maybe the reason my photography and writing are suffering because I have been worried about posting instead of producing and posting only my best work.

YES!
December 10, 2008, 9:12 am
It occurred to me recently that I am becoming with age, less adventurous. Having seen the commercial for Jim Carreys new movie “Yes Man” several times and not having to be a genius to deduce it’s plot, I concluded that maybe I have been missing out on the opportunities. For adventure, opportunity, and relationships that come with stepping outside of your comfort zone and saying yes to the unknown.
Hell if Grandpa can send an email who knows what my new attitude may produce- As for me I am going to go see Jim Carrey in his new movie and then carry my new attitude around town and see what I can get into.
(I don’t feel like posting a picture today)

I maybe converting-

From sleeping in boxers to sleeping in PJS.
I accidentally fell asleep in some sweats last night and when I woke up in the middle of the night I wasn’t freezing from no covers or sweating from too many covers, I was perfectly comfortable and warm from head to toe.
PJ’S who woulda thunk it… what else have I been missing out on all these years?

An Internet Miracle!
December 6, 2008, 7:03 pm
My Grandfather and I have had a very special relationship since I was born, the first grandchild and the families first male, and since I was born we’ve spent countless hours together, 18 hours straight in his Ford F150 driving from California to Oregon more times than I can remember, we’ve spent months in the yard pulling weeds and killing bees. There is not a minute we’ve spent together where either in word or action he’s presented to me every minute of every hour how a gentleman conducts himself. He credits himself with potty training me (like I didn’t have anything do to with it) and if ever I needed him I have no doubt he’d be there, hell or high water.
He is without a doubt above reproach with character that is impenetrable. Since I’ve been an adult I’ve felt that these traits hinder him because being impenetrable means that not only the bad can’t come in but also you miss out the good as well.
After quipping back and forth about long hair- his position, long hair equals you want to be a woman. My position, your hair has nothing to do with your character…I had given up hope on him ever opening his mind to any other opinion than he had already concluded in his 70 years.
But last night as I was doing some research I received an email from the man who would call you leave a message then turn his cell phone off. I was truly amazed that he stepped outside of his comfort zone and began to expand his horizons, it’s truly a Christmas Miracle!

FTF?
December 4, 2008, 8:41 pm
I have been trying to write this post the entire day…I woke suddenly at 3am thinking about it, and while I was negotiating with clients, trading emails (hundreds), and editing websites it was in the back of my mind. Can I do it?
How will I do it?
What’s an FTF?
Full Time Father, it’s not that I don’t consider myself a FTF now I have joint custody, speak and text like crazy with my daughter and have her whatever weekends I choose, holidays and summers…however, THIS summer my daughter is coming to live with me full time and I could not be more excited.
Where she lives now a 3 bedroom house rents for $700…In DC you can’t rent a room for that, and then there’s health care, after school programs, music, art, friends, menstruation, boys, puberty and more…
While I have no trepidation of having her full time; what I do have a holy fear of is not being the best father I can be. While presenting to my daughter how a Righteous Man treats his daughter, the women in his life (friends and colleagues),his mother and the people he comes in contact with each and everyday.
When I was 18 this picture would have been of me, instead of me taking this picture- crazy how life comes around.

Let's Talk About the Horse Under the Bridge.
December 3, 2008, 10:53 am
Washington DC is full of unusual sites, from the homeless urinating at random to the beautiful architecture from around the world. So when I woke up early this morning and my back felt pretty good I decided to take a walk and make some art.
Walking in a new direction, opened up the opportunity to shoot things I had never shot before, and being there at a time when I would normally be talking myself into getting a few more minutes sleep made me feel empowered by doing something small I have not been able to do recently because of back pain and other related…set backs.
By the title you may have guessed, this morning I saw a poor horse under a DC bridge and wondered what the hell is a horse doing under a bridge. I asked him but he wasn’t in the mood to chit chat so I moved on- I know you have heard this before but I thought I would reassure you again-
If you want a different result- try a different means of solving the equation.

Getting Inspired- Thanks Doug.
December 2, 2008, 11:07 am
I have recently looked at what I’ve shot amongst some of the worst times in my life and have objectively (or so I thought) shot some good work. Then my good friend and photogmentor Doug Sanford shows up drops a link in my comments and I go look at his work and suddenly feel terrible.
Well terrible is being dramatic: inspired to create, craving to learn new techniques, wanting to have my work critiqued by those who I respect in the field, motivated to go out, use, and get to know my new lens and save for a new body is more accurate. So thanks Doug.
Whenever I feel artistically blah, life has me stressed, I have a thousand questions and no answers I grab my camera and go walking. Sometimes I walk a path I have been a thousand times and look for something I’ve never seen, and sometimes I go a direction I’ve never been and take it all in, shot by shot looking for the “Pretty” if you will and appreciating each moment for what it is, a moment in history.
